Title: Divergent Series
Author: Veronica Roth
Genre: Young Adult Dystopia
Would recommend to: readers who like to immerse themselves in a story / fans of “The Hunger Games”
I devoured these books. I haven’t been this interested in a series of books since I read “The Hunger Games”. I loved everything this series had to offer: action, love, passion, madness… It was an artfully written series that touches upon deep concepts. Although Roth may have written about genetic damage, anyone that looks deeper at the theme understands she’s really making social commentary on racism and human nature.
I can’t say Tris was my favorite female character (I probably liked Christina a little more) or that I loved every choice Roth made along the way. But I can say that I loved these books. They might even be on my favorites list (which is hard to make it on to). I loved the overarching plot line, the way the characters interacted, the unique characteristics of the world — I could go on and on.
I thought all three books were written extremely well and in a manor that made me just want to keep reading more. They were perfectly tailored for young adult readers, but I think readers of any age will gain something from cracking the spines of these books.
Title: Divergent
Quotation: “We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”
Roth instantly grabbed my attention with the first book in the series. Between learning about Tris and figuring out what it meant to be “divergent”, I couldn’t put the book down.
I loved the unique aspects of the story — factions, initiations, etc. They made me want to figure Tris’s world out even more.
I also just really loved the story.
“Divergent” is a story about a young girl who goes against what she was raised to do and learns so much about herself, her friends, and her community that she never would have discovered otherwise.
It’s an engaging novel that ends with a BANG!
Title: Insurgent
Quotation: “Sometimes people just want to be happy, even if it’s not real.”
Because of the crazy ending to “Divergent”, I bought “Insurgent” less than five minutes after I finished the first book.
This was definitely my favorite of all three books.
“Insurgent” follows Tris around a ruined world that she is trying desperately to fix. I don’t want to give too much away (which is hard to do when you review a series), but this book, like the first, just makes you want to keep reading.
As a reader, you are so attached to the characters that you can’t help but root for them through the ups and the downs. You can’t put the book down, because you have to know what is going to happen to your favorite character.
Title: Allegiant
Quotation: “Why spend so much time and energy fighting something that isn’t really a problem?”
The last book in the series, “Allegiant”, is very different. First of all, it is written in two perspectives (Tris’s and Tobias’s). I personally wasn’t a huge fan of reading Tobias’s perspective, but it was a really interesting way to tackle the book, and at the end you find out why the choice was absolutely necessary.
Now I won’t give anything away, but I do want to talk about the end of the series, which upsets a lot of people. I won’t tell you what happens, I’ll just tell you that I like the ending. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a little broken up about it, but I understand why it had to happen. And I understand why it gives the book an interesting twist ending while still providing closure for readers.
If you are a fan of series, young adult fiction, dystopias I would suggest reading the “Divergent” series. I’m still not over it.
Happy reading,
Kimberly

I felt like I was reading someone I would write! I felt the same way. I wanted to be pulled into another series just as hard as I fell with THG. I kid you not, I think I read the whole series in a week. Personally, I loved the ending. It NEEDED to end like that. 🙂
I agree 100%
